Synopsis: Yugo Beppu is a world-class negotiator who is rumored to have never lost a case.  He uses words as his weapons and his extensive knowledge of human nature allows him to control deadly situations.  The cases he takes are those where a loved one has been kidnapped and he must believe in the person requesting the negotiation in order for him to accept the job.  He lost a friend during a kidnapping gone wrong due to failed negotiation and vowed to help others avoid suffering the same hardship.

A lovely Japanese woman comes to seek Yugo's aid.  Her father is working for a corporation overseas in Pakistan and was kidnapped by a group of rebels.  The company employed a negotiator to get her father back, but the military became involved and the rebels killed the negotiator.  Leading the rebels is a fearsome man who believes his work is blessed by Allah and he will only negotiate with a true hero.  Yugo sympathizes with the woman's plight and takes the case.
Yugo heads to Pakistan to negotiate with rebels
He must infiltrate Pakistan and engage the rebels without involving the military.  They wish to apprehend the rebels and avoid giving them financial aid to continue their resistance with no care for the life of the prisoner.  Yugo studies up on religious zealotry and carefully researches the players involved in the region.  He formulates a plan and has a friend prepare a few gadgets to help him while out in the field.  Once he makes contact with the rebels he must endure extreme torture to prove himself a true hero.  Can Yugo save the woman's father?  Even if he does can he escape the country without the military intervening?
Yugo must negotiate with this fearsome rebel leader
Yugo is sought out by the descendants of Russian royalty exiled in Japan. Two rings exist which when combined contain the secret clues to accessing the Romanov fortune.  One ring is held by the descendants in Japan and the other is in the possession of a granddaughter held by the Russian government.  Yugo travels to Russia to recover the girl and bring her to Japan to be with her family.  He takes the job and heads to Russia.
Yugo must rescue this little girl and her teddy bear (and her ring)
He must infiltrate Russia to find the girl and research the Romanov fortune.  Enlisting the aid of a young, beautiful college girl who studies Russian history, Yugo sets to finding records of a mysterious cargo shipped out of the country when the Romanovs fled.  A beautiful army officer was planted in Japan with the family in order to find the secrets of the fortune.  She was recalled to Russia and Yugo must deal with her on his quest.  The Russian Army wants to access the fortune in a time when Westernization has completely changed the country.  Can Yugo find the girl or will he be intercepted by the army?  Even if he survives the torture, can he survive the Russian winter?
This beautiful Russian officer was a plant in Japan for eight years
Pros: Lots of intense situations where Yugo's life is in danger, beautiful women, two complex stories with cliffhanger moments, Yugo is one tough and determined guy with high moral fiber, great backgrounds in the Russia arc
Ships docked in a frozen harbor in Russia
Cons: Yugo surviving and triumphing over the horrible torture he endures seems impossible, ending to Russia negotiation is completely hokey/impossible, opening/ending theme songs are mediocre, each story arc is written/animated by different people/studios, one Russian officer was a long-haired blonde dude - shyeah right!
Yugo gets tortured by the rebels in Pakistan
Mike Tells It Straight: Yugo is an intense, political anime with adventure and beautiful women thrown in.  Judging from what Yugo goes through to accomplish his negotiations successfully (i.e. torture) I would nominate his job for one of the worst jobs in history.  The writers obviously build Yugo up to be an impossibly resilient man - no one could endure the torture he does and still function as well afterwards.  It's just too much suspension of disbelief for an anime trying very hard to be realistic.
Yugo gets tortured by the Russian Army
I enjoyed the complicated stories and political intrigue, but certain events were hard to swallow.  Animation was decent and scenery (particularly Russia) was good.  Dub was okay.  I was expecting the show to be more episodic with Yugo negotiating a different crisis over a few episodes instead of two involved story arcs.
Yugo negotiates with this bullish female Russian general
Good luck, buddy!
The story felt conflicted with trying to be realistic, but then having these totally unrealistic things happen - Yugo's torture, the rebel leader in Pakistan shooting helicopters out of the air with a rocket launcher, Yugo surviving this crazy blizzard in Russia, and then the characters/ending to the Russian arc.  I came away thinking 'yeah, Yugo is tough, but that would never have happened!'.  The complex and intense situations were entertaining, but my final verdict is mediocre for this anime because of the unrealistic parts.

Synopsis: The work of a gifted scientist researching psychic abilities produces a set of twins with incredible abilities.  A terrible laboratory accident claims his life, but research on the twin sisters continues by the Kuryu Group corporation.  The sisters exhibit intensely powerful psychic abilities, but are both imperfect.  Elaine is childlike and mute as her mental state never fully developed, while Diana was born with a non-functioning body which has been replaced with cybernetics.  Both sisters are under the cruel care of the former chief scientist of the original researcher.  His ambitions are to create a bio-weapon for the Kuryu Group to secure their interests as a new global government forms.
Diana's cybernetic body
Elaine escapes captivity and befriends an impoverished local boy.  Diana and a group of cyborg mercenaries are sent to recapture her, but now Elaine has someone to fight for.  The frighteningly powerful being known as Genocyber emerges as a result of Elaine's stress and their battle threatens to destroy the city.  Can Elaine save her new friend and will Diana finally stop being used as a tool to keep Elaine in check?
Elaine and her friend having fun together
The Kuryu Group consider the Genocyber and its psychic potential to be their property.  If they cannot control the being then they will destroy it at all costs.  Another scientist from the original project creates an artificial being tapping into the same psychic reservoir as the Genocyber.  The being is called a Vajranoid and is stationed on a U.S. aircraft carrier for field testing.  The carrier picks up Elaine, who is suffering from amnesia.  What will happen when the two psychic powerhouses come into contact within the cramped space of the aircraft carrier?  The entire crew is in jeopardy as the Genocyber reemerges into the world!
The frighteningly powerful being known as Genocyber
Fast forward several centuries to a post-apocalyptic wasteland.  Ark de Grand is the one city which stands as a beacon for hope among the ruins of civilization, but it's run by a fascist dictator who brutally eliminates any opposition or dissidents.  Political rebels threaten his rule and he lashes out against a group of ostracized vagrants attempting to live beneath the city.  They worship the remains of a strange creature who resembles the Genocyber!  Will the devastating being resurrect itself to protect the innocent and what sadistic doomsday trap has the Kuryu Group left as a centuries-old contingency plan?
The cyborgs chasing Elaine have some nasty hardware
Pros: Incredibly violent and gory (if that's what you're looking for), first episode was pretty good and sets up an interesting plot (but...), designs for the Genocyber creature and cyborg mercenaries were cool, great metaphor for technology corrupting those who lose sight of their respect for humanity/nature
Never fall asleep with a hooker...or investigate the Kuryu Group
Cons: Plot is all over the place from episode to episode and quickly loses steam after a strong start, seems like the violence and cruelty took center stage, depressing and filled with horrific killing, ending was nebulous, animation wasn't great and also suffered from shifts between episodes, children are shown being violently gunned down in one scene
Something terrible happens to the crew on the aircraft carrier
Mike Tells It Straight: Genocyber is easily one of the most graphically violent anime series I have ever seen.  The term ultraviolence perfectly describes it and is only recommended for viewers who can stand scenes of graphic death/torture.  I watched the first episode back in high school in the 1990s and have wanted to see the rest of the series ever since (I was a teenage boy and fascinated by the graphic violence).
Classic scene from first episode's hospital massacre
Over fifteen years later and I finally watched the whole thing.  Well, it didn't hold up to my expectations as the first episode is clearly the best.  A fascinating story along the lines of Akira (psychically powered youths) is set up with strong emotional and graphic scenery.  However the plot shifts to two completely different settings (an aircraft carrier and a post-apocalyptic future).  I wish the first storyline was longer as I didn't really like the second and third quite as much.
Massacre below Ark de Grand city
It's not a terrible show by any means and the message of the writers/director were good - man commits atrocities and can be incredibly cruel to one another, but there is hope.  Overall Genocyber is a decent bit of science fiction (perfect example of modern old school anime) and some folks will like it very much, but the majority of viewers will find it to be far too violent.  If you're looking for dark sci-fi with a dose of gore then it's the perfect show.  Caveat emptor!

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo Anime Review

Synopsis: It is the year 5053 and humanity has settled the stars.  In the region called Eastern Space where many alien races live there has been a war raging for many years.  Paris is the center of the universe with an incredibly rich aristocracy ruling the vast expanse of colonized space.  We accompany two young aristocrats, Viscount Albert (pronounced Al-bear) de Morcerf and Baron Franz d'Epinay, on a trip to Luna (Earth's moon) during a grand festival (very much like Carnival in Rio de Janeiro).  Both young men are approximately fifteen years of age and engaged to wealthy young ladies in upcoming arranged marriages.  The two visit Luna to 'sow their wild oats' and gain exciting experiences.  While on Luna they meet an enigmatic nobleman from Eastern Space called the Count of Monte Cristo.
Albert and Franz living it up on Luna
Albert is particularly drawn to the Count's charismatic sophistication and participates in a particularly grave wager during a public execution at the festival.  Franz immediately sees the Count's dangerous mystique luring in his best friend and warns Albert to be wary.  It's too late as Albert ends up alone in the late evening of the festival and falls in with a lovely, but counterfeit young beauty.  He is kidnapped and ransomed.  The Count manages to rescue Albert from the kidnappers and this is the first time we hear the term Gankutsuou.  Albert is tremendously grateful and promises the Count he will be welcome in Paris anytime he visits.
The Count of Monte Cristo's intriguing visage
The two youths return to their opulent lifestyles in Paris, but Albert is unsatisfied with his life.  He feels forced into the arranged marriage to his childhood friend, Eugenie Danglars, who shared a privileged upbringing with him and Franz.  Her father is the most powerful banker in Paris.  The three were best friends, but their relationship strains as Albert seems to have changed after his exposure to the Count.  Albert longs for excitement and passionate love which seems out of reach under the stern gaze of his parents.  His father is the most powerful general in Paris and aspires to gain the presidency in the upcoming election.  Franz is completely indifferent to his arranged marriage and fiancee, Valentine de Villefort, the daughter of the most powerful magistrate in Paris.
The Count becomes Albert's mentor and confidante
Arriving in Paris, the Count quickly ingrains himself with the leading aristocratic families through Albert.  Each of the families harbor deep, dark secrets.  Albert's mother was in love with a man named Edmond Dantes who died in prison before marrying Albert's father.  Eugenie's mother beds young men while her husband ignores her in favor of amassing an even greater fortune.  Valentine's father remarried a gold-digging woman who is fiercely jealous of Valentine's inheritance status.  The young group of friends are pawns in their parents' machinations for wealth and power.  Albert becomes more starstruck towards the Count and blind to the true motives which slowly manifest themselves.
The Count visits Albert in Paris and is introduced to his friends
The Count has returned to Paris for one thing - revenge!  He wields an incalculable amount of wealth and a supernatural power called Gankutsuou.  The Morcerfs, Villeforts, and Danglars are the target of the Count's plotting and Albert is the catspaw to his plan.  Hidden secrets are dredged up from their graves and lives are ruined under the Count's relentless vendetta.  Both parents and children are ground upon the stern resolve of the unliving personage calling itself the Count of Monte Cristo.  What is the unnatural force called Gankutsuou?  Can Franz uncover the secret of the Count in time to save his best friend?  All of their lives will be torn asunder as the Count reaps his revenge!
Character relationship map - thanks to Gonzo and the translators!
Pros: Visually striking animation style (unique use of complex, bright patterns), CGI (computer generated image) elements were good (particularly the mecha battle suits), surprisingly decent dub, excellent adaptation of the classic story by Alexandre Dumas, addition of Gankutsuou to the story makes this adaption quite unique, won Best TV Series award at the Animation Kobe Fair in 2005, awesome ending animation and theme song (heavy metal)
The three old friends who are the subject of the Count's revenge!
Danglars the banker, Villefort the judge, and Morcerf the general
Cons: Opening theme song (although it grew on me by the end), you will love or hate the animation style, deviates from the original story by using the perspective of Albert to tell the story (in case you're expecting it to follow the book exactly, it doesn't in a lot of ways), original series was 6-discs long and the newer collection consolidates down to 4-discs - some image quality is sacrificed for lower price, ending could have been more brutal in regards to the comeuppances of despicable characters, Albert was annoyingly naive (on purpose however - and it worked!)
A duel fought with giant mecha battle suits
Mike Tells It Straight: Gankutsuou is a visually unique and striking adaptation of the classic novel Le Comte de Monte-Cristo by Alexandre Dumas.  First and foremost, the animation style is quite prominent as complex, brightly colored patterns are used instead of traditional filler/shading to the characters/backgrounds. I have not seen another anime use this style anywhere near as heavily and it immediately drew my attention.  While I enjoyed the style tremendously, it can be distracting and easily a make-or-break issue among viewers.  Gonzo did a wonderful job building the futuristic backgrounds and rendering the CGI elements.
The three childhood friends - clockwise from top
Eugenie, Franz, and Albert
The story itself is an adaptation and not completely faithful to the original.  Those expecting an exact replica of events from the original work will be sorely disappointed, but we must accept anime is a far different medium of expression (plus the book is from 1844).  I could tell the writers/director were very deferential to the original story walking the fine line of respectfully portraying the story and adding their own unique touches.  Their finished product was impressive.
Haydee the Count's servant, the Count of Monte Cristo, Mercedes
and General Morcerf, Baron Danglars, Crown
Prosecutor Villefort, Franz and Albert
I found myself drawn into the story and eagerly awaiting the next episode.  The Count of Monte Cristo is a classic story and known by almost all Western readers, but the writers managed to infuse some mystery by adding the supernatural element of the Gankutsuou aspect of the Count.  The biggest difference from the original is telling the story from Albert's perspective.  He's the naive kid the Count uses to get close to his enemies and begin destroying their lives.  It's a tale of betrayal where the Count becomes as evil as those he seeks revenge against and the message is soundly delivered.
Gankutsuou manifests in the Count's body
The Count of Monte Cristo is easily one of the most dramatic classical Western stories.  I felt the anime adaptation was suitably noteworthy and loved the mature tone (without a heavy dose of over-the-top violence or nudity/fan-service).  It's an anime meant for adults and left a lasting impression.  The ending theme song was perfect (the opening theme far less so).   Although the ending was toned down considerably and I would have preferred much crueler fates for the guilty, it was still a dramatic conclusion.  I'll give this show a high recommendation (if you can get past the visuals) and my greatest possible compliment - I'm keeping it in my collection.  Check it out (and read the original story)!

Synopsis: A mysterious and terrifying plague has broken out in Germany which reanimates corpses into frightening techno-organic monsters called 'Demoniacs'.  These creatures can fuse and control mechanical objects like cars, motorcycles, and weapons.  They typically go on berserker rampages leaving a bloody trail  of death and destruction in their wake, but without any real purpose.  The government forms a task force to counter the Demoniac outbreaks called the Xenogenesis Assault Team (XAT).  The XAT use advanced motorcycles and weapons to fight the Demoniacs.
Don't worry, it's just a naked woman's corpse
During a motorcycle race featuring Gerd Frentzen, the greatest motorcyclist in the world, a Demoniac begins a rampage endangering the crowd and seemingly targeting Gerd.  Another Demoniac appears to dispatch the first and then disappears.  This mystery Demoniac is codenamed 'Blue' by the XAT as they attempt to pursue it after the incident.  Unfortunately, Gerd is paralyzed in the attack and can never race again.
A Demoniac interrupts Gerd's race and 'Blue' comes to his rescue
Leading the XAT is Wolf Goring and his team consists of:

  • Amanda Werner - partner to Hermann, she adopted a young boy named Malek as her little brother, a strong fighter she spends too much time working to stop the Demoniacs and Malek is often left to fend for himself
  • Hermann Saltza - partner to Amanda, former racing partner with Gerd, hot-blooded and fiercely loyal, he is often reckless and charges into a fight without a second thought to help his friends
  • Brad Guildford - partner to Al, skilled XAT anti-tank sniper, stoic individual with a lot of combat experience
  • Al Lutz - partner to Brad, skilled XAT sniper, more laid-back and carefree than his partner
XAT members Al, Amanda, and Hermann
Gerd is depressed about being paralyzed and not being able to race. He meets a mysterious doctor who gives him a pill to walk again in a new powerful form - as a Demoniac!  His desire to race again is so fierce he accepts, but must fight back the raging bloodlust threatening to consume his soul.  Hermann attempts to help his friend and Blue reaches out to Gerd in an attempt to get him to control his transformations.  Amanda and the rest of the XAT try to hunt him down.  The mysterious doctor infiltrates the XAT compound and corners Wolf.  What is her hidden agenda which endangers the XAT?  Can Gerd harness his violent transformations into a Blassreiter?
Malek meets his motorcycle racing hero Gerd
Malek is tormented by bullies at school because he is a foreigner.  They mercilessly pick on him and his friend Johann. Amanda is consumed by her work and never around to protect Malek from the constant onslaught of physical/emotional abuse.  Malek befriends the enigmatic Blue and witnesses the transformation of his hero Gerd into a powerful Demoniac.  When Malek meets the mysterious doctor will he be tempted to become powerful like Gerd in order to fend off his tormentors?
Beatrice, the mysterious doctor offers a pill to solve all your problems
What is Blue's origin and why does he fight against the Demoniacs when he is one himself?  Who is the clandestine organization Zwolf?  Most Demoniacs are mindless monsters lashing out at their surroundings, but some become Blassreiters. What is the purpose of these fearsome beings and will the world be consumed by their fury?

Gerd in his Demoniac form
Pros: Good animation and complex CGI, each main Demoniac has a unique look, lots of fast-paced action, many plot twists and character shifts, depressingly dark, some good moral messages like 'bullying can get you killed', 'remember your friends after they've been brutally murdered', and 'take care of the poor by developing nanomachine technology', opening/ending themes are okay
Joseph Jobson aka 'Blue' - that's one depressing dude
Cons: Plot is convoluted mess which first appears religious (i.e. Demon-iacs, like demons from hell) and then technological, characters are annoying - all of them, just a bunch of action and no real story (besides Blue's depressing origin), too much CGI (computer generated images) for my taste, action is too fast and Demoniac character designs way too complicated/busy, lame ending (although somewhat touching), hair styles for Beatrice and Wolf are fugly
Joseph in his Demoniac form
Mike Tells It Straight: I found Blassreiter to be all flash and no real substance.  The story attempted to be grand and sweeping, but didn't deliver a powerful, coherent message.  The story focus shifted to several different characters over the course of the series:

  1. Gerd's transformation into a Demoniac and his fight to maintain his identity instead of giving in to mindless rage
  2. Malek's battle with his bullies, friendship with Blue, and temptation to become a Demoniac in order to get revenge
  3. The origin of Blue and the Demoniacs - get a box of tissues ready for this one
  4. Hermann tries to liberate Amanda and Malek from the Zwolf organization, but runs afoul of the Demoniacs
  5. Final battle with the secret leader of the Demoniacs and a high character death count
Gerd skewers a Demoniac in mid-air
The character relationships were the best part of the show as the XAT and Zwolf members exhibit great camaraderie/honor as they battle the Demoniacs.  I felt the character animation was good, but the CGI was too much - character designs were too busy or action was too fast to really enjoy.  CGI movement doesn't look natural or real to the naked eye - speeding it up in action scenes amplifies the 'fakeness' ten-fold and I didn't like it.
Joseph in his berserker state after Zwolf's enhancements
This show reminded me of Dragonaut: The Resonance (another Gonzo show) due to the heavy use of CGI effects (dragons there vs. Demoniacs here), but I liked Dragonaut far better - must have been all the fan-service.  Watching Blassreiter felt like watching a CGI version of Power Rangers (albeit a much darker version).  I enjoyed some aspects of the show, but overall it felt like Gonzo was trying too hard.  The final battle between 'Blue' and the main bad guy didn't live up to the hype.  The ending was pretty weak/sappy and I left feeling disappointed.  Only recommended if you're more interested in flashy CGI action scenes and can live with the mediocre story.

Synopsis: It has been eighty years since the human race was almost wiped out by an invading alien force known as the Zentradi in the first Space War.  Ten years prior to the war a mysterious ship crashlanded on Earth and was rebuilt by the unified world governments.  The rebuilt ship was called the Super Dimension Fortress Macross (SDF-1 Macross).  Its reconstruction was completed just in time to repel the first wave of Zentradi forces.  Over the course of the war the Macross executed a space fold to the outer edge of our solar system and contained a small city of civilians.  The Zentradi were giant humanoids and feared humans (called 'microns') possessed the secrets of the Protoculture (thought to be the creators and masters of the Zentradi).  99% of Earth's population was annihilated over the course of the war, but the crew of the Macross and its civilians were able to defeat the Zentradi through a combination of variable mecha fighters (transforming planes called Valkyries) and human culture.  The Zentradi race was consumed by war to the point where males (Zentradi) and females (Meltrandi) stayed in separate fleets and never mixed together.  They used cloning for procreation and had lost all aspects of culture to the point where a simple love song could irreparably disrupt their composure.
The SDF-1 Macross main cannon lights up to fire on the new alien threat
The human race has repopulated the Earth and the Macross is now considered an ancient relic.  It sits lifeless in the center of Macross City.  Renegade Zentradi forces still attack the planet occasionally, but the 'Minmay Attack' (where love songs are broadcast to throw the Zentradi forces off-balance) has successfully prevailed ever since the original war.  The U.N. Spacy forces have grown complacent and soft without a true threat to challenge them.   Hibiki Kanzaki is a young reporter for Scramble News Network (SNN) who is trying to make a name for himself.  He is critical of the government due to their tendency to censor any broadcasts which don't portray them in a positive light.
Silvie and Hibiki disagree due to their differing views of the U.N. Spacy
Enter the Marduk - an alien micron race seeking to destroy every other culture they come into contact with in the universe.  They use enslaved Zentradi (both male and female) warriors as their main combat force through the singing of specially trained female Marduk called Emulators.  They sing songs of war and destruction to boil the blood of their fighters.  Needless to say, the Minmay Attack fails miserably and the U.N. Spacy forces are being crushed mercilessly by the Marduk.  Hibiki rushes out to cover the combat with veteran reporter Dennis Lone (who is drunk) who values seeing both sides of any conflict and urges Hibiki to break enemy lines to get more information.
Hibiki kidnaps the beautiful Ishtar, a Marduk Emulator
Inside a Marduk ship, Hibiki and Dennis discover Ishtar, one of the Marduk Emulators.  Dennis is killed and Hibiki steals Ishtar away to Earth.  He becomes obsessed with showing the truth after his footage of the initial defeat by the Marduk is censored by the U.N. Spacy government.  Ishtar is delighted by the rich human culture she witnesses with Hibiki because the Marduk only wage war.  Lord Feff is the Marduk commander in charge of Ishtar and attempts to get her back by invading Macross City.  He pilots a fearsome battle armor against the U.N. Spacy's current variable fighter - the VF-2SS Valkyrie II.
Hibiki introduces Ishtar to human culture
After being exposed to Earth's culture, Ishtar renounces the war-like ways of the Marduk and wishes to see peace among the three cultures (Marduk, human, and Zentradi).  Can Hibiki with the help of ace pilots Silvie Gena and Nexx Gilbert get Ishtar back to the Marduk to spread the word?  They had better figure it out fast as Lord Emperor Ingues, the xenophobic and despotic ruler of the Marduk, has ordered all of his forces to crush Earth!
The fearsome Emperor Ingues - more machine than organic being
Pros: Marduk are cool villains (except that bastard Ingues!), Ishtar is beautiful, Haruhiko Mikimoto's character designs are great (he did the original SDF Macross designs), new mecha designs for practically all of the original series' mecha (VF-2SS Valkyrie II is particularly striking along with the Macross Cannons), songs are slightly decent in the old J-Pop 1980s way
The VF-2SS Valkyrie 2
Cons: Quite possibly the worst anime dub ever perpetrated upon the American public, plot is so bad it was expunged from canonical Macross history, none of the original Macross characters are seen or referenced (except the SDF-1 Macross itself), original creators Shoji Kawamori and Studio Nue were absent from this production, characters are terrible - Hibiki, Silvie, Nexx, Mash, Ishtar, and Feff, death of Dennis Lone in the beginning was almost comical in its absurdity, mecha designs are very different from original Macross series
Marduk-controlled Zentradi/Meltrandi battle armors
Mike Tells It Straight: Macross II is almost universally despised by the anime fan community for being one of the worst sequels in history.  I see where the producers went wrong - the original movie Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? (which was an original retelling of the Super Dimension Fortress Macross television series, i.e. original = no reused footage from the show) was a huge success and they wanted to capitalize on the franchise by creating a sequel.  Unfortunately the majority of the original creators didn't sign on for the sequel - writer/mechanical designer Shoji Kawamori, director Noburu Ishiguro, composer Kentaro Haneda, and the art studios: Studio Nue/Artland/Tatsunoko.
Ishtar implores Lord Feff to spare the humans
Only three original creators joined the sequel production team: character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto, the scripter, and the sound director.  The sequel had an all new writer, director, mechanical designer, composer, and animation studio with incredibly big shoes to fill.  Expectations were high and only perfection would be satisfactory to the fans.  I believe the creators did their best and produced a relatively good quality work, but nothing close to the cultural phenomenon of the first Macross.
Emperor Ingues supreme battle fortress closes in on Earth
The storyline itself was mildly compelling with the Marduk a clever foil to the established Minmay Attack of the first Space War.  This time around the love triangle felt forced between Hibiki, Silvia and Ishtar.  They should have focused on Hibiki and Ishtar by themselves.  The character of Hibiki himself was slightly dubious as he seemed to be more interested in breaking a story to make his career than truly caring about Ishtar.  The mecha designs were also highly controversial and a departure from the original series.  The VF-2SS and practically all the mecha are love-it-or-hate-it - over-complicated upgrades to the originals.  Ending was too similar to the first movie as well - final battle with alien fleet and finishing barrage to destroy the head bad guy (it was satisfying to see Ingues get his in the end).
Beautiful artwork by Haruhiko Mikimoto
Weak characters, horrendous dialogue and general plot issues combined with impossibly high expectations and the lack of original creative staff doomed this sequel from the beginning.  The voice acting and dub are particularly bad along with quite a few animation issues.  I wanted to like this sequel due to my absolute love of the first television series and movie, but the show was downright bad.  It had some good moments yet overall was a tremendous letdown.  It has since been relegated to alternate universe status and purged from canonical Macross history - that just about sums it up.
